Organizing Individuals - From Properties to lives
In the past Nada Thomson used to help organize people's property, now at the Sanctuary Mission she helps individuals to organize their lives. In 2006 Nada moved to assisting the poor after years of owning a business concern called Artful Organizers, where she was a personal organizer.
As a Christian organisation, it seeks to support those members of the community who would otherwise be ignored. Any ethnic groups regardless of faith are welcome, the Sanctuary will try to help as many people as they can. The charity has members from all walks of life, both sexes and a diverse age group, nobody is excluded. Five hundred faces every week and annually in the thousands.
The street outreach team does an essential job, going out to the community on their own turf, offering and giving support such as meals and Children's Aid. The support does not stop there, the Sanctuary also offers health clinics, support for those who are abusing drugs and rehab for the mind and body. Purposeful employment is another concern, with teams helping people into work through employment training.
To celebrate Xmas, the Sanctuary gives a massive Christmas feast which takes place each year. With Xmas gift bags, food, talent shows and a play, this is really a special time for all those involved. Those involved will do a big walk in the warmer months. It is definitely important that individuals know that when they donate money, they can participate. The rich and the poor, the charity want to could the differences. Those that feel that they have no pride left are helped to see that their life is worth more, thereby giving them back their dignity. Friendship is definitely important when trying to give help, cash alone won't provide a person with a sense of worth.
Thomson does not say that the mission is set up to replace the work of social services, but support and work with them. She also goes on to say that those people who previously lived on the streets now have a roof over their heads. They would not be able to do this without someone to help them look for a place and help them find furniture.
One of the better stories of The Sanctuary is that a young lady was born and raised in the Toronto area. Once she was born this child was placed in the foster care system; the following facts will show you why. The abuse she suffered included her aunt setting light to her crib. Her grandma found her covered in cockroaches. but she was sexually abused. Over the years she went through the homes of many foster carers, no relationship seemed to last long and this person was an addict. With support from quite a few people the woman is now moving forward with her life and has been attending the sanctuary for 4 years.
