jewelry Box for Women with Handcarved Marquetry

Women, generally, cherish their jewelry; it usually doesn't matter to them if the jewelry is cheap or costly or if it is a souvenir or has some sentimental value attached to it. The same care and attention are equally bestowed on each piece. So it is not surprising that a jewelry box for women is a totally welcome gift.

A handcrafted wooden jewelry box would be the perfect gift for a woman considering the importance she attaches to her jewelry. It helps in organizing their precious trinkets and safeguards them from getting tarnished or misplaced.

And with a jewelry box embellished with some delightful marquetry designs, it would perfectly match the dresser and enhance the overall look of the room. Marquetry is an ancient wood inlay art form that is done with the veneer and burl of some exotic woods to create decorative designs.

The easiest and simplest form of marquetry is done using just 2 sheets of veneer. Or it can use up to six sheets of very thin veneers for more complicated and intricate patterns. It is common practice to use veneers and burls of different rare trees from around the world.

The colors and natural grain patterns of the different kinds of wood lend beauty to the different designs. Marquetry would involve stacking several sheets of thin veneer preferably of different colors and grain patterns and cutting designs right through the stack with a fine knife or saw. This results in several pieces of the same design with different colors and grain patterns, that can be arranged to give a totally distinct look on different pieces of work.

For instance, using veneers of Hard Sugar Maple and Holly for cutting out leaves would leave you with a reddish brown leaf and an almost white leaf. These can be placed in interesting patterns on any surface. Skilled marquetarians cut out very fine lines in the veneers and fill it in with a sawdust and epoxy to produce the veins on the leaves.

Interestingly with time, Holly veneer if finished well, takes on a fascinating golden hue. This makes it look like some genuine gold inlay work that only on closer inspection would reveal that it is a piece of wood! As the colors of wood are limited to reds, browns, and rarely whites, to create colorful patterns and images, it is common practice to use dyed veneers. The veneer is infused under pressure with the dye that forces the dye right into the veneer. Then the veneer is sanded to get a piece of wood in any color that is needed.

Marquetry dates back to some three thousand years ago when the whole process was painfully slow and painstaking. Archaeological excavations over the centuries have unearthed exquisite marquetry designs made of different wood and other materials. Although this form of art work was predominant in the East, particularly in India, China, japan, and Persia (Iran), it is said that Egypt was the pioneer in marquetry.

Even though technological advances and modern tools have made the process less time consuming, a lot still hangs on the skill of the wood artist to produce a breathtaking and beautifully finished design.
